Artist Statement
My subjects are taken from the Past. But they are not ‘about’ the past. Not about History. My interest is in how we interpret the past. What we think the past means.

For painting:
I start by making drawings of figures I might use in a painting. Then I make sketches to design a composition.
I draw a full picture from the figure drawings, indicating approximate areas in paint. I emphasise some of the shapes that seem interesting and build the painting round them.

A common feature in my paintings is Amazon women. They are a metaphor for the way our passions dominate us.
If we wish to possess someone ( or something ) we may find that they possess us.
